Grand Junction Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation

A standard investigation is underway following an officer-involved shooting Sunday afternoon in Grand Junction.

According to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, officers responded to a report of a possible stolen vehicle shortly after 12 noon. Officers from the Grand Junction Police Department found the vehicle in the vicinity of 29 1/2 Road and Parkway Drive. When officers tried to contact the driver of the vehicle, the vehicle struck an officer and that's when the shooting occurred.

The injured suspect was taken to the hospital and is being treated for what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. The Grand Junction police officer that was struck by the vehicle, was treated at the scene for minor injuries by paramedics.

The Grand Junction Police Department says two officers discharged their weapons. As is standard protocol, Corporal Tyler Simonson and Officer Vaughn Sonderquist have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the internal investigation. Simonson has been with GJPD since 2000, while Sonderquist has been with the department since 2013.

The investigation into the incident is continuing, and anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to contact authorities.
