Denver Mayor Michael Hancock has apologized for flubbing Colorado State football coach Jim McElwain's name after McElwain's Rams beat the University of Colorado.

Hancock said on Twitter it was an honest mistake made in an exciting moment.

The annual in-state rivalry game was played Friday in Denver. Hancock presented the Centennial Cup to the Rams after they won 31-17.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reported Tuesday that Hancock twice tried to say McElwain's name but only got out "Coach Mac."

McElwain still appeared irritated about the fumble at a news conference at CSU in Fort Collins on Monday but later thanked Hancock for his tweet.
