NFL Divisional Playoff Recap: Patriots & Falcons Advance To Title Games
The New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons each advanced to their respective conference’s championship game on Saturday. Here’s a recap of the day’s action:
New England 34, Houston 16
Dion Lewis scored three touchdowns and Tom Brady threw for 287 yards, as the New England Patriots rolled over the Houston Texans, 34-16, an AFC divisional round playoff game in Foxborough, Mass. on Saturday.
With the win, New England advanced to its sixth consecutive AFC title game - a new NFL record. The Patriots will face the winner of Sunday’s Steelers-Chiefs clash next week for the right to go to the Super Bowl in February.
Lewis had a touchdown reception, a kickoff return for a touchdown and a rushing touchdown to lead the New England offense. He also fumbled a kickoff return, which, combined with Brady’s two interceptions on tipped passes, helped keep Houston close.
Brady threw TD passes to Lewis and James White. Julian Edelman led the Pats with eight catches for 137 yards.
The Texans’ defense was able to pressure Brady often and sack him twice. However, their offense could not produce enough points to win. Houston quarterback Brock Osweiler was dreadful, completing 23 of 40 passes for 198 yards and a touchdown, with three interceptions.
Atlanta 36, Seattle 20
Matt Ryan threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns, and the Falcons squashed the Seattle Seahawks, 36-20, in an NFC divisional round playoff game in Atlanta on Saturday.
With the victory, the Falcons advanced to next Sunday’s NFC title game against the winner of Sunday’s Packers-Cowboys game in Dallas.
Atlanta scored on four of their first five drives and were in control for nearly the entire game. They led 19-10 and half and poured on the offense in the second half as they coasted to the surprisingly easy victory over the NFC West champs.
The Falcons destroyed the vaunted Seattle defense, rolling up 422 total yards in a game that was more of a rout than the final score indicates.
Russell Wilson completed 17 of 30 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions, for the Seahawks. He also led his team in rushing with 49 yards on six carries.
The Atlanta defense harassed Wilson all game, sacking him three times and forcing more than 15 hurries.
