Would you like to learn more about the inner workings of Grand Junction's Police Department? Here are five reasons why you should consider participating in the Citizens Police Academy.

The Grand Junction Police Department is accepting applications right now. A friend of mine participated in the program years ago, and to this day maintains it was the best thing he had ever done. This could be right up your alley.

What They Do

According to the Grand Junction Police Department's official webpage:

If you have ever wondered what it takes to operate a law enforcement agency, how we make critical decisions, how we spend tax payer dollars, or just what it’s like to be an officer in Grand Junction, this class is for you.

The Grand Junction Citizens Police Academy is a free, fun, and informative 10 week program designed to provide citizens with comprehensive information about the operations of the Grand Junction Police Department, often not known by the public. It is our hope that the information provided will foster a relationship that will assist in a safer community and a more informed body of citizens.

Word On The Street Is This Program is Awesome

A good friend of mine participated in this program a few years ago. He was flat-out passionate about it. What exactly do they cover with this program? Topics include:

  • Patrol Operations
  • Body-worn cameras
  • Sex offender tracking and registration
  • Drug Task Force
  • Media Relations
  • Forensic investigations
  • School Resource Officers
  • SWAT
  • K9s
  • Firearms Training Simulations
  • Grand Junction Regional Communication Center

Seriously... SWAT? Yep, that's what it said.

When and Where

The course runs from April 20 through June 15, 2023. Meetings are held Thursday evenings at the Grand Junction Police Department. There will be one Saturday session on June 10, 2023.

Might Just Be What You're Looking For

These are my top five reasons why you should join:

  • It's a closer look at a potential career path you may want to consider
  • Get a deeper understanding of police work and the day-to-day lives of those in law enforcement
  • Build a stronger appreciation for law enforcement
  • It's a better investment of your time than hanging around the mall
  • Everyone I know who has ever taken this course says it's one of the best things they've ever done.

Class size is limited, so please apply as soon as possible. Before you can participate you'll need to fill out an application. You can download the application or pick up a copy at the Grand Junction Police Department at 555 Ute Avenue.

The selection of participants will be at the discretion of the Grand Junction Police Department. You will receive notification regarding your application and acceptance to the Academy.
