Game 1 of the World Series is tonight with San Francisco at Kansas City. Madison Bumgarner gets the call for the Giants, who are trying to become the first National League team to win three World Series titles in a five-year span since the St. Louis Cardinals of 1942-46.

The Royals, back in the Series for the first time since winning the title in 1985, counter with James Shields. Shields is getting the opening game assignment for the third time this post season, while Bumgarner hasn't allowed a postseason run away from home in an MLB-record 26 2/3 innings. That record goes back to 2010.

Both teams will be coming off their longest layoffs of the season. The Royals went 8-0 in the AL playoffs, giving them five idle days before the opener. San Francisco went 8-2 on the NL side and had four days to rest up.

Game 2 in the best-of-seven series will be Wednesday night in Kansas City before the series moves to San Francisco.
