The Cardinals slip Adam Wainwright back into the rotation today when they host the Phillies are part of a 15-game major league schedule.

The right-hander skipped a start to allow some tendinitis in his pitching elbow to calm down. Wainwright takes a 9-3 mark and 2.15 ERA into the game. For the Phillies, Cole Hamels takes a streak of 23 2-3 consecutive scoreless innings into his start.

Justin Verlander will be trying to reverse his recent spell of disappointing pitching, when he gets the start for the Tigers tonight at Cleveland. The former Cy Young award winner is 2-5 with a 7.83 ERA in his last seven starts.

Jason Vargas takes a 7-2 mark into his start for Kansas City today against Seattle. Vargas has won three in a row. The Royals have dropped two in a row to fall a half-game back of Detroit for first in the AL Central.

The Tigers continue their series at Cleveland.

The back and forth for first in the NL East continues tonight in Washington where the Nationals host Atlanta. The Braves moved a half-game past Washington for first in the division with their second straight win over the Nats last night. It was Atlanta's seventh win in eight games against Washington this season.

It's a full 15-game slate in the majors today and tonight.
