It was called the wheel club instead of the bike club because bicycles were referred to as wheels back then and sometimes are still referred to that as that now. (Hey, nice wheels.)

According to the Historical Photos of Fruita & Western Colorado's Facebook, the club was formed in 1897. The club was made up of young men from Fruita and the club participated in a whole bunch of races.

Fruita's Social Wheel Club competed in regional races like the annual Colorado Midland Bicycle Road Race and won, with a recording breaking time.

John Beard won the race, which was 23 miles long, and beat the record and won in one hour 16 minutes and 23 seconds, according to the Historical Photos of Fruita & Western Colorado's Facebook.
