You should always practice safe driving, but make sure you're extra careful on the roads this Friday.

According to a press release from Colorado State Patrol (CSP), the agency is teaming up with local law enforcement for a "strict enforcement operation" on June 16.

That day, troopers will be on the lookout for distracted driving behaviors like recklessness, carelessness, lane violations, and speeding — with a particular focus on the areas of Highway 34, Highway 50, Highway 40, Highway 287, Highway 160, I-25, and I-70.

CSP says that residents should expect to see increased troopers across the entire Centennial State.

The agency hopes the enforcement operation will aid in ending distracted driving, which caused 745 fatalities last year — the most traffic deaths Colorado has seen since 1981.

Earlier this year, CSP revealed that hit-and-runs have also increased in 2023, and in May, the Centennial State experienced 11 traffic fatalities in just six days.

To ensure that you don't meet a trooper on Friday, CSP suggests the following:

  • Adhere to the speed limit.
  • Place distractions — like cell phones, snacks, and music — aside.
  • Keep a distance from other dangerous motorists and pull over to report them to CSP.
  • Put your seatbelt on and do not get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
