The Fascinating Reality of Colorado Prison Farms + the Food
When one thinks of the prisons in or near Cañon City, Colorado, it's typically visions of ADX Florence, also known as Supermax, as well as the many notorious criminals who have called the impenetrable fortress home or, in some cases, still do.

However, despite Supermax's notoriety for being home to bad guys like El Chapo, the Unabomber, Timothy McVeigh, and many others, there are also plenty of other, less secure prisons nearby that house criminals who committed much less heinous crimes.
With that said, it may come as a surprise to find out that inmates from some of these prisons have historically worked on what are called 'prison farms' and you may have even consumed some of their food.
Colorado's Fascinating Reality of Prison Farms
While many Coloradans have probably not even heard of the prison farms near Cañon City, it's entirely possible that some of the goods produced there made it to your table.

For example, a farm belonging to The Four Mile Correctional Center is known for being home to quite possibly the largest herd of domesticated water buffalo in existence and the milk produced at this particular farm is done so with the help of inmates.
On the topic of milk, it was reported in 2015 that there is a large goat farm just five minutes from one of the prisons in the area and like the buffalo farm, inmates are involved in the production of this goat milk as well.
Finally, suppose you found yourself buying tilapia from a Whole Foods store, especially around 2015 when an article was released regarding the origin of the fish meat. In that case, there's a chance that it came from another prison farm in the area that specializes in products that come from the fish bred and raised there.
