Receiving vaccinations for measles, mumps, and rubella has been commonplace for children across the United States for years. However, one of these devastating and highly infectious diseases has been making a comeback in recent years and 17 states have already reported cases in 2024.

Will Measles Return to Colorado in 2024?

The Centers for Disease Control has reported that as of March 15, 2024, 17 states have reported cases of measles since the year began.

A total of 58 cases have been reported so far this year in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.

While the closest case to Colorado so far was reported in Arizona, measles is a highly contagious disease and unvaccinated individuals are easily susceptible.

58 cases of measles nationwide seem like a concerning number, but one particular year saw a much more staggering number, including cases in Colorado.

What Kind of History Does Colorado Have with Measles?

While there currently aren't any reports of measles in Colorado, the Centennial State did report cases last year.

However, the most devastating year with regard to measles outbreaks across the country in recent memory was undoubtedly 2019.

That particular year saw cases in 31 states, including Colorado, with an alarming 1,274 positive cases nationwide. The year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic saw the most cases of measles since 1992.

Measles can cause breathing problems, brain damage, digestive issues, seizures, and even death.
