Who Was Selena Quintanilla?

Selena Quintanilla was a native Texan who grew up in Corpus Christi. From a young age, Selena had a passion for singing and her family started a band called Selena y Los Dinos.

Selena toured across Texas playing at local fairs, quinceañeras, and other local events eventually becoming a Tejano music icon. At the time Tejano music was dominated by men, but Selena was able to break down barriers to become the Queen of Tejano Music.

In 1994 at the 36th annual Grammy awards, Selena took home a Grammy award for the best Mexican-American album with Selena Live! Years of dedication to her craft were paying off for Selena when tragically her life was taken by the manager of her fan club on March 31, 1995.

Selena Quintanilla's Legacy Lives On

Selena's death sent shockwaves across the country and an estimated 60,000 people are reported to have attended her funeral.

Her legacy lives on to this day through her music and fans. At the 63rd Grammy Awards show in 2021, Selena was honored with the lifetime achievement award which, "celebrates performers who have made outstanding contributions of artistic significance to the field of recording."
