USPS Issues Alert for Colorado Residents to Check Their Mailboxes

What Is National Mailbox Improvement Week?

The United States Postal Service can't deliver mail to a box that is falling over, infested with wasps, or full of water, and sludge. Mailbox week is our chance to check the appearance and function of your mailbox. Does it wobble? Are the hinges rusted and stiff? Does the wind blow it open?

Why is it important to pay attention to your mailbox? Failure to keep your mailbox in working condition could result in USPS holding your mail at the post office while you make repairs. If the box is left unserviceable, your mail may be returned to the sender.

Colorado mailboxes should be positioned 41 to 45 inches above the road, and 6 to 8 inches back from a raised curb. Each mailbox should face outward on the right-hand side of the road in the direction of travel.

Maintenance Tips & Ensuring Mail Security

A successful check of your mailbox includes looking for loose hinges, rust, and signs of instability. The post office will hold mail for up to two weeks while you make repairs to your mailbox. Just notify them as soon as you notice the box needs repairs.

Help your mail carrier by keeping the box clear of obstructions like trash cans, and be sure the address numbers stay legible. These regular checks will help your mailbox last longer and ensure you get all of your mail.
