When Will Western Colorado See the Most Snow This Winter?

The 2024-2025 Old Farmer's Almanac has released a 'first look' at the winter forecast for the Mountain West, indicating the upcoming season looks like a 'calmer and milder' winter than last year.

Just a couple of weeks ago the Farmer's Almanac published its winter forecast calling for a 'wet winter whirlwind.' Both almanacs have been helping forecast the weather for hundreds of years, yet both offer different predictions for the winter ahead.

Old Farmer's Almanac VS Farmer's Almanac Predictions

While the Farmer's Almanac dates back to 1818, the Old Farmer's Almanac began forecasting in 1792. The Almanacs have different opinions about the upcoming winter due to their unique evaluations of how La Niña will impact North America.

From 2022 to 2023, a mild La Niña helped set a record for snowfall on Western Colorado's Grand Mesa. Yet in 2023-2024, a stronger La Niña produced snowfall totals only slightly above average.

The Intermountain Winter Forecast for Grand Junction

The Old Farmer's Almanac is calling for a calmer, gentler winter than last year. While the almanac predicts that temperatures will be mild, average to above-average snowfall is expected. The Old Farmer's Almanac says Western Colorado's snowiest months will be mid-November, mid-to-late January, and late February. They predict the coldest stretches of the season will occur in early to mid-January. They also expect most of February to be the coldest part of winter.
