Flags In Colorado Flown Half Staff For Only Part Of Memorial Day
Here's something I never knew about American flag protocol for Memorial Day across the United States.
It's not uncommon for people to see a flag flying at half mast and wonder why - who is that honoring and who ordered the flag to fly at half mast?
Typically, only the President or Governor of a state can order all flags to fly at half staff to honor significant people who have passed away. But given Memorial Day is to honor all of our fallen military members over the history of our nation, doesn't it make sense that the flag would fly at half staff all day?
That's what I figured, but it turns out, that's not the case.

The US Flag code with regard to when and how long to honor someone with a half mast flag is pretty complex, but Memorial Day is the only holiday that comes with a midday change.
The first half of the day - from sunrise until noon local time - the flag should be flown at half staff to honor all who have lost their lives in the service of a grateful nation. But at noon, the flag is to be raised to full staff to honor all the nation's battle heroes until sundown.

No matter if you have a flag on a pole where you can raise and lower your flag or just one little pole off the front of your house, we can all agree that honoring our nation's heroes is always the right thing to do. Remember why we have a long holiday weekend - in many ways, because of those who aren't here to have it with us.
