Extreme Couponing for Beginners

Extreme couponing has taken off in recent years. Television shows, blogs, websites - the buzz has been everywhere, touting ways to not only stretch your budget and save cash but for some, it's become a quest. The sport of extreme couponing begins with a pair of scissors, a few apps, and a little time.

As Thrifty Nomads explains, extreme couponing uses coupons and loyalty programs to a shopper's advantage. The basics are pretty simple:

  • Shoppers learn coupon lingo and understand expiration dates, quantities, etc.
  • Collect coupons from various sources, such as online, flyers, and newspapers
  • Get multiple duplicates of coupons for the same item
  • Use technology, such as cash-back apps, to get more savings
  • Get organized with a binder, dividers, and labels

The whole thing was all fun and games, until last month when Walmart changed its policy on coupons. The new policy will effectively put an end to extreme couponing in their store.

Walmart's New Coupon policy:

  • Eliminates overages
  • Imposes like-coupon limits (one coupon, one item, per customer)
  • Declines a cash register override if the coupon is rejected

No More Cash Back on Differences at Walmart

While Walmart doesn't deal in digital coupons, store coupons, or double coupons, until now Walmart was considered one of the most coupon-friendly retailers in the nation.  The store imposed fewer limits than other retailers.

One of the most notable changes in the new policy? Walmart is no longer allowing product overages.

Up until now, Walmart honored the full coupon value, no matter the price of the product being purchased. For example, if your coupons were worth more than the product value, the store would either give customers cash back or apply the difference to the transaction.

There is also a new coupon limit: consumers are limited to four identical coupons per household, per day. So no more endless coupon stacking, either.
