It's National Devil Dog Day, and I'm on the hunt for a Devil Dog so I can appropriately celebrate.

The creme-filled devil's food treats are just one of many yummy snack creation from Drake's including Ring Dings, Funny Bones, and Yodels. Today, Drake's is owned by McKee Foods, which purchases the brand after Hostess filed for bankruptcy in 2012.

Drakes's Baking company got its start in the 1880s, but it wasn't until 1926 that Devil Dogs hit store shelves.According to legend, during World War I, German soldiers called the U.S. Marines "devil dogs" because of their tenacity. The nickname eventually inspired the name for the snack cake.

I want to celebrate National Devil Dog Day.

Now, the problem is, devil dogs are marketed in the northeastern United States, and recently expanded to the southeastern and mid-Atlantic regions. I'm pretty sure Grand Junction doesn't fall into any of those regions. So, as nearly as I can tell, the only way that I am going to be able to enjoy a Devil Dog is to place an order online.

It looks like they can be ordered online from places like Target, Sam's Club, and Amazon. I thought maybe they would be available at the Grand Junction Target, but, alas, my quest for Devil Dog's at Target came up empty. If you know of a place locally to buy a Drake's Devil Dog, please let me know ASAP.

I suppose we could use a substitute for the celebration like Ding Dongs or Ho Hos and get by this year. But, next year, we need to make sure we get our order in for Devil Dog early enough to have them here for National Devil Dog Day.

Nonetheless, as we celebrate today, let's not think about snacks, but rather let's honor those hard-fighting Marines. If we happen to run across a yummy Devil Dog it will be an added bonus.
