Kornball, a.k.a. Jeff Korn, was on 99.9 KEKB and MIX 104.3 a number of years ago. He's still out there, and big things are on the horizon.

Western Colorado used to wake up to Kornball and his live radio show weekday mornings from 6 to 10 on 99.9 KEKB. He would then mozy across the hall and do the midday shift on MIX 104.3.

What Got Me Thinking About This?

Sad news came down the wire this weekend. Actor/radio personality Howard Hesseman passed away. You knew him as the beatnik morning DJ on the unbelievably realistic TV show "WKRP in Cincinnati." In early episodes, he used the moniker Dr. Johnny Fever. In later episodes, it seems they dropped the "Dr." from his credentials.

It just so happens Howard Hesseman had been a radio personality in his youth. He worked at the underground FM station KMPX in San Francisco in the late 1960s. Imagine that, working in radio in San Francisco in the late 1960s.

You can't believe how incredibly accurate WKRP was. Thinking about Howard Hessemen made me stop and reflect on some of the radio personalities I've enjoyed working with over the last 30 years.

What's Kornball Up To Now?

Most people probably aren't aware of this, but before moving to Grand Junction to do radio, Jeff "Kornball" Korn was a standup comedian. He was working in Florida when he interviewed with KEKB.

Fast forward to 2022, and Kornball is back on the comedy circuit, performing his fifth one-person theater show. Subject matter includes:

marriage
career change
life revelations
a near-death experience...

Wait a minute... near-death experience? I don't remember hearing anything about that? I've been in touch with Jeff and he never mentioned anything about that.

What's the name of the new tour? Get ready for this. Looking at the tour's official webpage, it seems the new tour is called "Rubbing the Belly." I'll have to ask him about that, too.

The soon-to-be-legendary Rubbing the Belly tour will kick off in Virginia. Tickets are on sale now.

The photos below are from the personal collections of father and son, James and Robert Grant. James L. Grant of Clifton served in the United States Navy during World War I. Years later, his son, Robert Grant, would serve in the United States Army in World War II.

James L. Grant served as the Postmaster of Clifton. His son, Robert, was the photographer at the Daily Sentinel from the late 1930s until his retirement in 1985. James passed away in 1971, and Robert in 2000.

Grand Junction has hosted the Junior College World Series for close to half a century. For approximately half of those years, Bob Grant was there with his camera. He continued capturing images of the tournament until his retirement in 1985.

My dad (Bob Grant's son-in-law) went through a ton of Bob Grant negatives to dig up a few memories. Baseball fans are sure to remember many of these shots.

One of Bob Grant's most prized photos would be the first image in the gallery, the shot of the hawks at Suplizio Field. That particular shot won him an award from the Press Photographers Association.

As a Grand Junction native, I really enjoy some of the nostalgia spotted on the signs in the background. Did you see the billboard for "Mr. Steak"? If you were around Grand Junction in the 1970s, you definitely knew about "Mr. Steak."

What Became of Former Grand Junction Colorado Radio Personality ‘Kornball’?
