There's a big auction coming to Grand Junction this Saturday, and if you're in the mood for a little fun, it's imperative you attend. What does an auction have to do with fun? Catch the event and find out.

Have you ever wondered what happens to all the bikes and miscellaneous items collected by Grand Junction and Mesa County authorities? Yes, some of it gets claimed by the rightful owners. Some of it, though, does not. This is where you come in.

What about all the retired police cars, tractors, and lawn care equipment? What happens to that stuff? It goes up for auction, that's what.

When I was little my dad went to this auction and bought one of those old "chopper" bicycles. Do you remember those? They had the extra long forks. He picked that up for something like $2, brought it home, put a psychedelic paint job on it, and voila! Okay, so that was 1978. There can be little doubt this year's auction has a few gems, too.

We received a ton of weird looks riding around on that bike. It most definitely caught its second wind. Unfortunately, I disobeyed instructions and kept performing stunts on the bike. Those elongated forks were never built to withstand the stress of extreme jumping.

Look at this little beauty below. I don't even know what it is, but I know I need it. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure how I've lived 47 years without it.

That's my point, you can pick up fun items at dirt cheap prices. Imagine having a good time with items you wouldn't normally be able to acquire. In case you need more convincing, here are five reasons to attend this Saturday's auction:

  • Your chance to industrial grade equipment you might not find anywhere else.
  • As mentioned in the video at top, those former police cars are pretty hard to beat.
  • Find a bike, maybe even your own bike, at great savings.
  • Find "project" items like the chopper bike I mentioned above.
  • City and country crews tend to be meticulous with their equipment, so this is your chance to score gear which has been well taken care of.

The City of Grand Junction and Mesa County Auction is this Saturday, May 6 at Inland Avenue just off 25 Road. Buster Cattles will be your auctioneer. Gates open at 8 a.m., and the auction starts at 10 a.m.
