Wouldn't it be cool to view the upcoming eclipse from the highest peak in Mesa County? A local lodge is hosting a "Great American Eclipse Party," and you are invited.

On Monday, August 21, you are welcome to join the crowd at 7:30 a.m. at Mesa Lakes Lodge. The group will set out from the lodge by 8 a.m. on a trek to Leon's Peak, the highest point in Mesa County. From there, you'll enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime view of the eclipse.

There will be a short drive from the lodge to Weir & Johnson. At that point, you are to unload your vehicle and begin the hike to the summit. This should offer plenty of time. Ideally, everyone should be in place by 11:30 to see the eclipse.

A professional photographer will be part of the entourage, chronicling the day's events. You are asked to wear bright, Colorado themed clothing, if possible.

In addition, you are asked to bring:

  • Proper eye-wear to see the eclipse
  • Your own food and water
  • Sun screen
  • Bug spray
  • Camera
  • Good hiking shoes or boots
  • Poncho, rain jacket, or tarp
  • Your smiles
  • Your friends
  • Your dog

The organizers of this event would like to place an American flag at Leon's Point to commemorate the hike. If you have an extra flag and/or flag pole hanging around, they would appreciate it.

The mountain guide at Mesa Lakes Lodge, Luke Dobbs, is in charge of the event. Think of how great it will be having a professional guide taking you to your destination.

It's hard to imagine a better way to see the eclipse. This event is free and open to anyone and everyone. Make the upcoming eclipse the memory of a lifetime.
