Have you witnessed the drone invasion near Grand Junction's Central High School? It seems as though these little flying machines launch an assault about every week or so.

Drone enthusiasts gather every Sunday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Long Family Memorial Park just off E 1/2 Road by Grand Mesa Middle School and Central High School. If you pilot a drone, or if you're simply interested in watching others fly, you are welcome to participate for free.

As you can see in the video, several of the drones take a digger while attempting to navigate the obstacle course. Apparently, these are tough little machines and can easily withstand some of the abuse.

Why this particular park? According to Frank Bregar, "Longs Park has shade, bathrooms, and electricity so my son likes Longs Park better." There you have it.

Where else can you go in Western Colorado to race drones? Racers gather at Canyon View Park on Sundays as well.

What happens when you get good at racing and want to turn it up a notch? The Drones in the Desert racing event is coming to 3320 Whitewater Hill on September 2 and 3, 2017. Cash prizes will be awarded:

  • 1st Place = $300
  • 2nd Place = $200
  • 3rd Place = $100

This looks like fun. The people who come out to race are some of the nicest folks you'll ever meet. If you're in the market for a new social activity, you might want to join in.
