Exhibit Features Artists Experiencing Homelessness in Colorado
An exhibit unlike any other is currently on display in Colorado. This exhibit is unique in the fact that it not only features artwork depicting homelessness as the subject but these pieces are created by homeless individuals in Colorado as well.
A Unique Colorado Exhibit
The art exhibit is called "We Have a Story: Homelessness in Colorado Springs" and is the brainchild of the Pikes Peak Library District based out of Colorado Springs.
The idea began last year with members of the library district teaching four different Coloradans experiencing homelessness a lesson on photography, then giving them cameras to document their lives. To be more specific, the individuals were asked to portray "what it means to be homeless" via photographs.
In addition to the photographs, the artists also provided descriptions and/or brief messages to accompany their pieces.
Here we see a pair of pieces from a homeless man named Donnie:
We see "Untitled 1" above, followed by "Untitled 2" below:
This piece features a soldier who is currently experiencing homelessness in Colorado, along with a deep backstory:
This next piece features a well-known statue in Colorado Springs along with a homeless Coloradan beneath it:
This next piece is titled, "Life's a Trip."
The exhibit is currently up at Colorado Springs' Cheyenne Library where it will stay for over a week, then will move to Rockrimmon Library for the remainder of the month. The exhibit will then move to East Library in Colorado Springs where it will stay for the entire month of February followed by the month of March at Library 21C, also in Colorado Springs.
