Newhook was drafted by the Avalanche with the 16th overall pick in the 2019 NHL draft.

The 20-year-old Newhook had made an immediate impact in college hockey. He received the Tim Taylor Award for being the NCAA Division I Rookie of the Year as a freshman in the 2019-20 season. He collected 42 points that season with 19 goals and 23 assists. He was the hero with four game-winning goals during that freshman campaign.
