62-Year-Old Man Attacked by Moose in Colorado

A 62-year-old man was attacked and injured by a bull moose in Colorado earlier today, Wednesday, August 25th.

It seems like Colorado had a lot of encounters with bears in the past few years, but this year seems to be the year of the moose in the Centennial State.

The incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. near Winter Park where the man, who has yet to be identified, was taking his two dogs on a run on a trail with no leashes. The dogs abruptly stopped running while about 40 to 50 feet ahead of the man and turned back to join their owner.

It was at this point that the man, who was visiting from New Mexico, realized the reason that the dogs stopped dead in their tracks and came back as he was greeted by a large male or "bull" moose.

It was at this point that the moose, obviously feeling threatened, attacked the man. Luckily, the only injuries suffered by the man were hoof-shaped lacerations on his back, and both of the dogs were left unscathed.

The man was taken to a local hospital several hours later where he was treated for his injuries and it has been said that his dogs are both accounted for and are just fine.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife Manager Serena Rocksund had this to say about the incident:

This is a good reminder for folks to keep their dogs on leash and give moose plenty of space when recreating outdoors. It's hard to see around these corners with the thick vegetation on these trails, so have a dog on a short leash here is key.
