10 Animals You Might See at Horsetooth Reservoir in Fort Collins
There's no shortage of things to do at Horsetooth Reservoir. You can paddleboard in the water, hike to the falls, or admire the park's abundant wildlife.
We're talking about the latter today. Read on to see which critters you can find at Fort Collins' most famous natural area, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).
Mule Deer
The mule deer is a "common" fixture of Horsetooth Reservoir. CPW says you can identify them by their large ears, even antlers, and "rope-like tails."
Raptors
CPW reports that hawks, goshawks, eagles, and harriers are all frequent flyers at Horsetooth Reservoir.
Coyote
CPW notes that you'd be hard-pressed not to find a coyote anywhere in Colorado, let alone at Horsetooth Reservoir.
Striped Skunk
Horsetooth Reservoir is home to the striped skunk, an animal that CPW says is one of four skunk species in Colorado.
Squirrels
According to CPW, both tree and ground squirrels live at Horsetooth Reservoir.
Cottontail Rabbit
CPW reports that while there are three kinds of cottontail rabbits in Colorado, the mountain cottontail likes Horsetooth Reservoir.
Porcupine
Porcupines are another common sight at Horsetooth Reservoir. According to CPW, they enjoy hanging out near trees or rock shelters.
Red Fox
Of the four species of foxes in Colorado, CPW says that red foxes call Horsetooth Reservoir home.
Black Bear
CPW notes that black bears are rare at Horsetooth Reservoir, but you can occasionally spot them.
Mountain Lion
Mountain lions are another rare feature of Horsetooth Reservoir. CPW attributes the animal's rarity to its elusive nature, although sightings are becoming more common.
